Swedish vs. Deep Tissue: Which One Do You Actually Need?
The most common question I get at intake. Here's how to think about it without overthinking it.
Most people pick deep tissue because they think gentle isn't "real" massage. They're often wrong about what their body actually needs.
Here's the simplest decision framework I've got:
Pick Swedish if...
- You're stressed, anxious, or burned out
- You're not sleeping well
- You haven't been worked on in a while (or ever)
- Your body feels generally tight rather than locally angry
- You want to leave feeling calm, not worked over
Swedish is the one that resets the nervous system. That's actually where most chronic tension lives — in a body that hasn't been able to drop out of fight-or-flight in months.
Pick deep tissue if...
- You have a specific knot or pain pattern you've been chasing
- Your shoulder/lower back/whatever has been tight for weeks
- You're physically active and your muscles need real work
- You've had massage before and Swedish-pressure feels like nothing
- You're prepared to feel "worked on" for a day after
Deep tissue is for the structural stuff — adhesions, restrictions, knots that have been there long enough they have a zip code.
What I usually recommend
If it's your first session with me, start with Swedish. I'll see how your body responds, find the spots that need real work, and we go deeper next time if you want.
If you've been on tables for years and know what you like, book what you know.
If you're not sure — call. I'd rather spend three minutes on the phone than guess.
Stay close to the work
Occasional notes on bodywork, breath, recovery, and the kind of self-care that actually changes things.

Booking happens through Vagaro at Essence Salon and Spa LLC. Pick a time that works, and I'll see you in the room.
